The Chan Clan

In the documentary About love, Mr. and Mrs. Chan, the director questions her parents about their arranged marriage and their integration into Dutch society and culture. The video camera is used as if it was a photo camera in order to portray ordinary daily life of the parental couple.
Primarily this documentary deals with painful memories of people confronted with life in the promising West. “I used to be a happy girl” Mrs. Chan contemplates, while her daughter swallows audibly when her parents become emotional about their frustrations and feelings. Painful moments are alternated by disarming humour, both by director Chan and her parents. The quest for identity that Ting Chan has for herself in finding a way to define what love is all about, is mirrored in relation to what her parents believe is true for themselves and should be for her.
